24 April 2007, Darshan Day: The Mother's Final Arrival at Puducherry
The Mother came to Puducherry for the first time in March 1914. She returned to France in 1915 and then went to Japan in 1916. She returned to Puducherry on 24 April 1920, never to leave again. On this significant date, the Mother once wrote to a disciple:
April 24: The anniversary of my return to Pondicherry, which was the tangible sign of the sure Victory over the adverse forces.
It was then that slowly the Ashram grew and took shape around Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. The 24 April is also celebrated in the Ashram as one of the four Darshan days. On that day, Sri Aurobindo's room will be kept open for Darshan to the visitors.

The first arrival of The Mother at Pondicherry

As you may be aware that at the age of thirty-six the Mother journeyed to Pondicherry, India, to meet Sri Aurobindo . She saw him on 29 March 1914 and at once recognised him as the one who for many years had inwardly been guiding her spiritual development. Staying for eleven months, she was obliged to return to France because of the First World War. She lived in France for about a year and then in Japan for almost four years. On 24 April 1920 she returned to Pondicherry to resume her collaboration with Sri Aurobindo, and remained here for the rest of her life.

Governing Council

A colony of about 1200 residential flats like Shipra Riviera, obviously, needs some apex body for local governance and welfare measures. But to call all the residents to assemble for a General Body Meeting of the Residents’ Welfare Association is absolutely impractical. Therefore, a system can be envisaged to do away with the GBM and create a representative body called, Governing Council.

Each block of 36 flats will elect one member of the Governing Council. Thus, the Governing Council will have about 60 members and will meet every month. The President will be elected directly and nominate the Executive Committee members from the Governing Council. tusarnmohapatra@mail.com

Ghaziabad rated in world's 10 most dynamic cities

NEW DELHI: Believe it or not — and many inhabitants who have to battle pathetic infrastructure, chaotic traffic and soaring crime probably won't — Ghaziabad is in Newsweek's list of 10 most dynamic cities in the world. For good measure, it has also been billed "India's hottest city". Based on an advance copy of the latest UN forecasts for cities with populations greater than 750,000, Newsweek's list encompasses the fastest-growing cities in each of the world's 10 most important economies.

Only two major capitals — Moscow and London, which continue to outpace smaller rivals for unique national reasons — figure on it while the rest are aspiring middleweights like Toulouse, Munich and Las Vegas, or unknowns like Florianspolis (Brazil), Goyang (South Korea) and Fukuoka (Japan). Sanjay Verma, joint managing director of Cushman & Wakefield, attributes the rapid growth to Ghaziabad's excellent connectivity with Delhi, which creates more new jobs per year than Bangalore and Hyderabad, as well as an established IT destination like Noida.

"It's very strategically located on the old Grand Trunk Road. Not only does it attract a sizeable IT/ITES workforce from Noida, it is affordable for those who can't manage Delhi prices," he says. R C Mishra, Ghaziabad Development Authority secretary, doesn't deny that the rapid industrial development in Ghaziabad is the result of a spillover from Noida and Greater Noida. "Sahibabad was conceived as an industrial estate but Ghaziabad's growth has been quite recent," he says. Today, the city has more than 14,000 small-scale industrial units and larger plants run by giants like Coca-Cola and ITC.

Ghaziabad can boast of having only IMAX in N India

NEW DELHI: Ghaziabad has been billed "India's hottest city" by the Newsweek magazine. The spurt in high-end residential development is visible on the skyline of this factory sub-urb. Sold-out luxury condominiums, northern India's only IMAX as well as a host of glitzy malls and multiplexes have mushroomed alongside ubiquitious manufacturers of gears and gaskets. So have the GDA's plans.

Besides chalking out a Vision 2020 plan, it now has plans to wean away big players in the IT sector who have been staying away due to fears of inadequate security, power and traffic congestion. "Inquiries from corporates who want to establish a base here are coming regularly. We plan to demarcate different pockets so that the requisite infrastructural support can be provided," says Mishra.

For Leena and Siddharth Johri, who moved from a rented barsaati in upmarket Jungpura to a three-bedroom apartment in Indirapuram, reservations about living in Ghaziabad have disappeared along with rise in real estate prices. "Just two years ago, we bought our flat at the rate of Rs 1,500 per square foot and today it is over Rs 2,500. We are elated at the boom." A boom that has also placed Ghaziabad on the global map.

Fighting and slaying the evil force is an ancient Vedic imagery that we encounter in our day-to-day life. During these week-long Durga Puja festivities, we are reminded of the need to cling to this heroic task, even while immersing in the carnival of culture and creativity.

As Indian genius is being increasingly recognized the world over, we need to be a little more careful and curious about our own wisdom and religion. New meanings and methods must be empathized and an inclusive discourse encouraged. That would be one sure way to usher in peace and harmony.

Indirapuram is one of the fastest growing sub-cities in the country. As a satellite township adjoining the National Capital Territory- Delhi, it has its own importance and possibility. But an integrated approach to its future development is missing. The concept of NCR was stretched too far to be a workable proposition. As a result, transportation and communication integration remains a distant dream. Even DMRC is myopic not to think of Indirapuram, as of now.

Chandigarh should have gone to Punjab and Delhi could be integrated with Haryana. If a new state is formed comrising East-Delhi and West-UP, then the momentum of development can be geared up. A comprehensive vision for the whole area is the need of the hour.

Savitri Era Learning Forum

Savitri Era Learning Forum posits a model of counselling and communicative action as an instrument in order to stimulate the public sphere. The model aims at supplementing the individual’s struggle for a successful social adjustment with more aspirational inputs so as to help one take an informed and balanced attitude towards life as well as society.

Once again the much-awaited autumn days are here and we are invoking the auspicious presence of Maa Durga along with her family. While we worship them with purity, sincerity and surrender, the five deities imbue us with power, wisdom, prosperity, excellence and innovation.

No wonder, a whole lot of artistic possibilities and creative efflorescence come flooding during these week-long festivities. Along with sports events and competitions in traditional arts and amusements, they offer ample recreations as well as cultural inducement to the young and the old alike living in our campus.

While I am beholden to the individuals and institutions for their continued patronage of this annual venture, I invite you all to come forward with open hearts to partake of the Divine benediction and receive inspiration for a life of collaboration, solidarity and harmony.

• Born in Varanasi on 15 October 1956, Santosh Verma received his Masters degree in Fine Arts from Benaras Hindu University.
• He is the recipient of some of the most prestigious awards, including the National Akademi Award, AIFACS Award (2000 and 2001), Sahitya Kala Parishad Award (1994) and Bharat Bhavan Award (1992) among others. He was awarded a senior fellowship by the Department of Culture, Government of India.
• He has held numerous exhibitions at the national level, including solo shows at Dhoomimal Art Center, Jehangir Art Gallery and Taj Art Gallery. He has also been involved in a number of prominent group shows. These include “Kite: A Celebration of Freedom” at Habitat Center, organized by Dhoomimal Art Gallery, Delhi ; “Faces behind the Canvas”, Sarjan Art Gallery, Baroda, “Contemporary Artists of Uttar Pradesh”, etc.
• In a period spanning more than a decade, he has successfully participated in several exhibitions across the country that include National Exhibition, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Lalit Kala Akademi Golden Jubilee Celebrations, 2004, Bharat Bhavan,Bhopal, AIFACS and many more.
• His works are part of the collections of National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Kala Parishad and several other institutions in India and abroad.
